Rajasthan Royals (RR) is an IPL-playing team based in Jaipur. It was established in 2008.
During the bidding process in 2008, RR was bought by Emerging Media IPL Ltd for $67 million. This amount was the lowest among the eight teams bought.
The team won the title of champions in the first IPL league. Shane Warne was the captain at the time.
Due to their involvement in the illegal betting scandal in 2013, the team and the Chennai Super Kings were suspended from the 2016 and 2017 IPLs.

In the 2008 IPL bid, Emerging Media IPL Ltd. and others bought the franchise of Rajasthan Royals.
Other stakeholders of the team were Suresh Chellaram and Lachlan Murdoch.
Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty bought an 11.7% stake in 2009. But the Supreme Court found Raj Kundra guilty in the illegal betting case of 2013, and Raj Kundra gave up his stake in 2015.
Amid the match-fixing scandal, Suresh Chellaram transferred his entire 44.2% stake to Tresco International Limited, a company owned by his daughter.
Chellaram’s daughter Amisha Hathiramani, who lives in Nigeria, has been spotted in some matches of Rajasthan Royals.
Chellaram is relative of Lalit Modi. Modi, the founder and commissioner of the IPL, was found guilty of indiscipline and financial irregularities and is currently a fugitive.
Badale gradually increased his ownership of the franchise to 65% in 2021.
In 2021, Red Bird Capital Partners acquired a 15% stake in RR, while Ameesha Hathiramani sold her 15% stake.
Former captain Shane Warne, who retired in 2015, owns a 3% stake in the RR through his undergarment brand ‘Spinner’.
RR currently has four franchise owners as of 2023, Manoj Badale (Emerging media) 65% stake, Gerry Cardinale (Red Bird Capital Partners) 15% stake, Lachlan Murdoch (Blue Water Estate), Shane Warne (Spinner) 3% stake.

RR in IPL 2008
On April 19, 2008, RR faced the Delhi Daredevils in his first IPL match, losing by nine wickets.
Cricket experts began to believe that RR’s journey in the IPL would be difficult.
However, Shane Warne’s strategy and the combative attitude of the entire team ensured 11 matches victory out of the 14.
On June 1, 2008, RR faced CSK in the IPL final. RR’s brilliant strategy and competitive spirit saw them beat CSK by three wickets to win their maiden IPL trophy.
RR in IPL 2009
Shane Warne captained and coached the team in the 2009 IPL. Warne’s performance was poor; he could not contribute more runs to the team.
Due to some circumstances, Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson could not play in this IPL.
In total, RR played 14 matches and could only win six games. The defending champion team could not make it to the semi-finals.
The team had to be satisfied with the 6th position on the league’s scoreboard.
RR in IPL 2010
RR’s performance in this IPL could have been better; the team could not even make it to the playoffs and finished 7th on the scoreboard.
RR in IPL 2011
Even in this league, RR could only achieve a little success, winning only 6 of 14 matches.
Due to rain, one match against RCB ended in a no-result, and they finished sixth in this IPL.
RR in IPL 2012
Shane Varna was the coach this season, but Rahul Dravid was in charge of captaincy.
After winning the first two matches, the ups and downs continued. RR could win only seven of the 14 games played.
After losing to the Mumbai Indians on May 20, 2012, the team remained in seventh place.
RR in IPL 2013
Rahul Dravid was captain this season, but Paddy Upton was named coach.
RR made a comeback in this league and regained its former glory. The team won 11 of the 18 matches it played.
After losing to the Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier, the team finished third in the points table.
RR in 2014
Shane Watson was the team’s captain in this IPL, and Paddy Upton remained the coach.
Out of the total 14 matches played, the team could win only seven games and lost 7. The team ranked 5th position in the points table.
RR in IPL 2015
Shane Watson remained the captain and paddy coach in this IPL as well.
Initially, the team won 5 consecutive matches. But later, the performance was disappointing. RR won 7 out of 13 games played
After losing to RCB in the Eliminator round, they are placed in the fourth position in the points table.
The team was suspended from the IPL in 2016 and 2017 due to a match-fixing allegation.
RR in IPL 2018
After the suspension, the team returned to the IPL. Steve Smith was named captain.
But in the ball-tampering controversy not only did Smith step down from the captaincy; in fact, BCCI even banned him from playing in the 2018 IPL.
Ajinkya Rahane was the captain.
Of 14 matches played, RR won only seven and finished fourth in the points table.
RR in IPL 2019
In this IPL, Ajinkya Rahane was the captain for the first eight matches, but due to Rahane’s poor performance, Steve Smith took over as captain beginning with the ninth match. Smith was back on the team after the ban.
They could win only five out of the total 14 matches. One match ended in a draw, and their position was seventh in the score table.
RR in IPL 2020
In this league, Andrew McDonald was appointed head coach instead of Paddy, while Smith remained captain.
The team’s performance was very disappointing, winning only six out of fourteen matches, and ranked at the bottom of the scoreboard.
RR in IPL 2021
Following last year’s humiliating defeat, the franchise released Captain Steve Smith and appointed Sanju Samson as captain. Trevor Penney was entrusted with the role of coach.
The team won only five of the 14 matches it played, finishing seventh in the score table.
RR in IPL 2022
In this IPL, the franchise appointed Kumar Sangakkara as the coach, and Sanju Samson remained the captain.
RR performed very well in this league and reached the finals. But in the final, they lost to Gujarat Titans by seven wickets and remained in the second position in the score table.
Is Shilpa Shetty the owner of the Rajasthan team?
Shilpa Shetty became the co-owner of the RR team in 2009 through the stake. But due to the involvement of her husband, Raj Kundra, in illegal betting, she had to sell her stake in 2015. Shilpa is not the team’s owner at the moment.
